Michael Novak Supports John Kasich For VP
Published July 8th, 2008 @ 10:01 am. Tags: Josh KasichTheologian Michael Novak, the world’s leading authority on the intersection of market economics and Catholicism (see here, here, and here) who is also solely responsible for me becoming much more serious about my faith, writes at NRO’s The Corner that he would like to see Josh Kasich as John McCain’s running mate:
He should be smart, witty, tough, and a just plain no-nonsense presence. You’ve all seen him a lot on television in the last few years. He was born in Pennsylvania, has grown up in Ohio (which he represented in Congress for his allotted terms), and would be just as perfectly credible in Detroit as in the beautiful rolling hills of rural Michigan. He is the perfect Ohio-Michigan-Pennsylvania candidate, John Kasich.
I am not the first to recommend Mr. Kasich, even on NRO. But I do so with calm confidence in his superior qualities and common touch — and his zest for down-to-earth political argument. The kind of guy — we used to say where I grew up in Pennsylvania — you could trust, back-to-back, in a barroom brawl.
I would respectful request that Prof. Novak retract his blog post, as Ohio needs him in the governor’s office instead.

I agree with the analysis of Kasich as a “perfect” candidate, but he’s needed in Ohio. Kasich is one of the only politicians who tells it like it is (a one man straight talk express) and his campaign for governor will energize this state. I can’t wait for 2010.
No to veep, yes, yes & yes again to “guvna!”
McCain has now announced he will balance the budget in 4 years by cutting spending. Has he really been paying attentionin Congress?
That is laughable, unless we have economic growth so unprecedented it would be near impossible.
Kasich would be better off running in Ohio than jumping off a cliff with McCain. But will Kasich jump off his own “balance the budget by cutting taxes” cliff?
Kasich is solid and would be a terrific Governor…. but why do I keep hearing Rob Portman’s footsteps getting louder and louder???
As much as I would like for Kasich to be McCain’s Veep, I don’t think there is a snowball’s chance McCain will pick him. Those two had a major falling out in 2000 and neither has forgiven the other. Portman is on the short list though and would be a very solid pick for VP.
I keep hearing Portman and Pawlenty are at the top of the Veep list.
Kasich will be a fantastic Governor. The only problem is money. A lot of the Republican lobbyists in Columbus have already promised their cash to the incumbent.
True enough…That’s why we have had a [relatively] small “campaign savings account” built up since we saw the bloodbath wrting on the wall during the 2005 primaries. We figured at one point, you’ve got to put your money where your mouth is, and we have at present, a maximum contribution (per couple) for Kasich’s primary.
I agree that Rob would be the smartest, most strategic move for McCain and for several reasons. But that’s assuming McCain & his “new crew” have the intellectual horsepower to realize the benefits (doubtful).
