NPR reports that the economy is so bad, that these two Ohio women have to cut back on meat and ice cream:

Phil Gramm was so right!

I just saw this on drudge too!!! It looks like $102.00 can by some chow!!! I’m a biggun myself but wow! Should I apply for state aid since I spend too much time at the McD’s?

There are two votes that will offset mine in the upcoming election…disgusting…

Sorry ladies, the economy isn’t what’s killing your chance of employment.

The “get pregnant” comment is sad…I have a relative that got told the same thing at one point while getting assistance. At LEAST these two aren’t falling into that trap.

The last thing these two need is meat and ice cream…having to walk to work could do them some good.

For all you “Wall-e” types that think this is fat people harrassment…suck it up…you know you’re thinking it too!

I have to feed a family on less and it really isn’t a problem. We just lay off the starches and meats and eat more fruit and veggies. Less junk food is not a crisis. Let’s keep this in perspective, folks.

    Not much to add.

This actually proves part of the problem, it’s the choices made and if they are now relying on starches, which they are conditioned to believe is cheaper, it adds to the obesity issue that many are experiencing. Especially in lower income families.

It’s like when electeds did that whole “foodstamp challenge” rather than to take it as an opportunity to demonstrate how it could be possible to feed a family within that dollar amount and not rely on mac and cheese or peanut butter, those who took part fell into the same mindset.

You can feed a family of four for the $250.00 they are currently spending and feed your family meat and have it be healthy. It does take some work and some planning though and more importantly than that, it takes some type of information/education process being in place to help those that have lived that way for quite some time.

It also calls into question the practice of placing subsidized housing units where there is no public transportation. If we truly want people to succeed they have to be in an area where if there are not jobs within walking distance there is at least a public transportation system.

If anyone was actually interested in solutions, the first one would be to only allow subsidized housing units where access to public transportation existed, and as a part of the foodstamp system as a requirement to get food stamps have one or more mandatory classes taught by a dietitian so that people learned first hand how to stretch food dollars yet eat healthier. You can’t control what they buy but you can at least do a better job in giving them some tools to make better choices.

Has anyone noticed we have the worlds fattest poor? Has anyone noticed that our poor have one if not more TV’s in their Government subsidized housing? (which means out of our wallet) Has anyone noticed that our “poor” people in the US a lot of them have computers? If they are so poor how can a lot of them afford cars? (let’s hope they have insurance too) Or are they as poor as they say they are?

  6. 6 Doug Berger

“Poor” is a relative term - meaning it depends on the standard of living where the person lives, the median income, etc….

Poor is the US is a LOT different than poor in Chad for example.

Have you ever noticed that rich people here have more than one car, more than one phone, they have cable TV and can buy shoes for their 2.5 children every few months. Must be nice.

Some working poor have a job but are one paycheck away from homelessness. They are affected more by rising prices because they have less income to start with. Working poor have cars but they tend to be later models - more than 5 years old or more. People can buy an Internet ready computer for less than a $100. If a “poor” person has one or an X-box it is because they spent their tax refunds on them - remember them? Most working poor are required to have reliable transportation and a phone to get and keep their job.

Fast food isn’t a “treat” as you think it is but sometimes the only stable meal they can afford. Can you say $1 menu? Can anyone make a hamburger sandwich at home for $1 or less per burger?

Obesity isn’t just about eating too much it is also about eating the wrong food.

So why don’t we just get a gun and start picking the “poor” off - right? I mean that’s what you all want - using the recession and “all bunch of whiners” to express your idea that “hey if they die off no big whoop…” Just means more for us…. Classy.

    A catch-all blame game isn’t any classier…

God has a great affinity for those who are truly poor in any capacity, but put and keep their trust in Him (Lk 21:2-4, the “widow’s might”).

And whereas I believe that we have a responsibility to those who truly seek help (via faith-based programs that “teach a man to fish” vs. “steal from the taxpayer’s minnow bucket”), I also believe they have a responsibility to accept, learn, and not pass on the cycle of dysfunction to future generations.

We are told that the poor will always be among us (John 12:7-9). He doesn’t blame anyone there, just makes the statement. We [responsibly] do what we can (tithe, intercede, minister, etc.) based on our obedience to the Father. Anything past that is grand-standing and self-serving.

  8. 8 Hmmm.

Doug - BS on the food costs. You can literally live forever off beans, rice, and frozen broccoli that costs you less than $1 per meal.

    To Doug Berger,

If you are going to say that conservatives are the ones who want to kill off inferior peoples, I suggest you actually look at real factual history. Progressives like Margaret Sanger wanted to see less blacks in the world and actually allowed her magazine to publish nazi eugenicist articles. Progressives were the ones talking about racial and class purity.

As usual, liberal projection and arrogance. Conservatives say, you all need to make better choices. liberals just throw money and then whine about the problem and ask for more money.

  10. 10 The_Assimilator

Fred, I couldn’t have said it better myself. The reason that the USA is becoming a welfare state is solely due to poor decisions and policies implemented by liberal governments and politicians.

I can’t believe this is even a story, these two have more excuses for not working than anyone I have ever seen. More government aid will not help these folks and will probably just make it worse for them. They need to get off their rear ends and do what people in this country have done for 200 plus years, work and make your own way. When the story quoted them as saying what will we do I thought of a few choice words but I will leave it as stated above, get a job! If there is no work in Ohio come down to West Texas, we have restaurants that are shutting down because they can’t find help, and the ones that are staying open are paying 12 dollars an hour to get good help, plus you can just about choose your hours. Our hotels have brought in people from Europe to work in them because there just isn’t enough people to work out here. Come on down, we will put you to work!
